The wireless demand for wireless data is constantly driving R&D personnel to look for new technologies to expand wireless data capacity and network capabilities. Industry experts generally agree that even with current and planned infrastructure in full swing, data needs will continue to outstrip existing capabilities, and the debate has shifted from "if" to "when." Wireless service providers are planning to upgrade their networks to 4G LTE, LTEAdvanced (LTE-A), and more advanced technologies, introducing innovative solutions such as small cell coverage, heterogeneous networks, carrier aggregation, and 3GPP roadmaps. However, it is clear that the capacity slope produced by the current technology trajectory is still flatter than the demand line. In response to this challenge, the 3GPP standards entity has recently set a target of "1,000 times by 2020" in data capacity to meet the needs of evolutionary or revolutionary ideas.
This concept requires the base station to deploy extremely large antenna arrays, which may contain hundreds or thousands of transceivers. This concept is called massive MIMO. Indeed, massive MIMO is detached from current network topology and may be the key to solving the wireless data challenges we face; However, in the process of understanding the efficacy and/or feasibility of widespread deployment of massive MIMO, a question arises that arises: will someone create a prototype just to determine if it will actually work? After all, creating a prototype with thousands of antennas presents several engineering challenges, as well as other issues that cannot be ignored: cost and time.
